Use of wood ash and anaerobic sludge for grassland fertilization: Effects on plants and microbes

چکیده
Increasing the share of renewable energies is among the prime policies of the European Union. Among the options are the incineration of wood in combined heat and power plants as well as the anaerobic digestion of organic materials to obtain biogas. Both processes leave behind residual matter – wood ash and anaerobic sludge. These residual materials contain chemical elements with considerable fertilizer value, but can also contain heavy metals, xenobiotics and may emit odorous components. Wood ash is often deposited in waste dumps at considerable expense, and the increasing centralization of biogas plants results in problems for the distribution of the residual sludge, with not enough agricultural land being in the vicinity of the biogas plants. Wood ash has traditionally been used as fertilizer. Some studies have shown that grate (bottom) ashes may be used as fertilizer in agriculture and forestry (FRITZE et al., 2000). The ability of ashes to increase soil pH by oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of K, Mg and Ca is an advantage for the treatment of acidic soils (HOLZNER and OBERNBERGER, 1998; HOLZNER, 1999). DEMEYER et al. (2001) found a positive effect of ashes on soil texture, aeration, water holding capacity and cation exchange capacity. The gener-

the effect of granulated wood-ash fertilization on soil properties and greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions in boreal peatland forests
The amount of wood ash produced in power plants is increasing with increasing use of forest biomass in energy production. Wood ash can be recycled as fertilizer especially in boreal peatland forests naturally rich in nitrogen. Improved nutrient availability and increases in soil pH can enhance microbial activities, decomposition of organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We studied t...

Nowadays, waste production is increased due to the growth of technology and excessive use of natural resources as well as production of new chemicals, among which the hazardous wastes are no exception of that stabilization and solidification method is one of the hazardous waste management methods through which the waste materials are stabilized and confined. High flexibility for various polluta...
متن کاملSoil Fertilization Leads to a Decline in Between-Samples Variability of Microbial Community δ13C Profiles in a Grassland Fertilization Experiment
Gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) was used to measure the (13)C/(12)C ratios of PLFAs at natural abundance levels from a temperate grassland nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) factorial fertilization experiment in northern Greece. In each plot two rhizosphere samples were derived centred around individual Agrostis capillaris and Prunella vulgaris plants. It ...
متن کاملRunoff Characteristics in Forest Plots before and after Wood Ash Fertilization
Spreading wood ash on forest and agricultural lands has been used for years to correct pH in acid soils and as a source of plant nutrients. However, it is necessary to enhance the knowledge of potential hazards derived from such a practise. Surface runoff pollution is one of these possible hazards. In this work we studied the quality of runoff water collected in two sloped forest plots before a...

Attempts should be made to recycle, re–use and utilize waste. Paper manufacturing is a complex industry involving multiple processes where different products are produced and large quantities of waste of primary, biological or de–inking origin are generated, waste water treatment sludge, primary sludge, and secondary sludge among them.1,2 The primary sludge is generated in the largest quantitie...
